From a photo 25.07.10

Fragments of arms and legs -But moved on from there.
Undecided about painting the block construction so am leaving it.
A few works still unhappy about but they will have to sit by the wayside because it is time to get cracking on the new canvases I prepped up a few months ago. A few ideas slowly settling, posssibly advancing in a figurative direction based on some scribblings. Ultimately hope to move a bit quicker with them but we'll see. But holiday in 4 days so time out till August!

Block construction

Perched on my stool, the Block construction comes together. The pieces have been cut up and joined again, getting bigger and more complex.

July wind

I took a leaf to identify this tree but no luck yet! quite a dramatic break. The trunk must have been slightly damaged already for this to happen and block the access by the tow path on the river lea. It was windy but not violent enough to do this but of course we know not to underestimate its capacity to cause havoc.

Finished works

Limo (brown haired girl), Oil and gloss on mdf, 21 x 24.5cm

Frisbee 34 x 39cm, oil on board

TICK tock

Time is ticking and time to start finishing some paintings very soon. I've been pushing a few ideas around in a number of works and Connie says you do too much to them - (overwork them) she's right, often I am thinking that question what would happen if i did...(put a blue over there) but I try not to get too het up with the process nowadays.(good/bad?)ie
Oh no I put the blue there.
Great the blue goes well there
More blue needed..etc
I am quite attached to the making of abstract images through trial and error and a relationship with paint and the various ways of applying it and arranging it. I don't feel like dressing up what I'm doing at the moment but I read a quote from Bacon when his work was showing at the Tate last year that he thought abstract painting can never be more than just charming, lyrical and decorative. Apart from enjoying watching him speak about painting in grainy BBC interviews a bit of me wants to prove him wrong ! Haha.
Anyway time to dig out some drawings

Goldsmiths MA show

My three notable mentions are: Joey Holders highly decorative paintings were eye catching, Haroun Hawards' paintings showed interesting technique - inventive use of spray paint.

But my favourite was the first thing I saw - Hye Young Ku s 'pop' video was wonderful and entertaining, if I am allowed to say that.

'Baitdigger', showing at BHVU exhibition

The ground in this painting gave me the idea for this work. Encountering the murkiness of the paint left in the turps jar - waste paint particles at the bottom, had a quality like muddy sand, such as on the beach, when left exposed by the receding tide. There's remnents of a once oversized degree show painting in here too, pasted in as part of the collaged approach.
Primary colours/muddiness, cheeriness/doubtful....

2009. Oil and acrylic on canvas on board.
17.5 x 14.5cm x 5cm deep
